Maintaining Good Oral Health

14th March 2024

How to Properly Maintain Good Oral Hygiene?

When it comes to preventing any sort of gum disease and keeping your teeth healthy, the right maintenance of your teeth is the first step to maintaining good oral health. By using the correct cleaning methods, the best industry-approved toothpaste and mouthwashes, you are well on your way to having a healthy mouth.

Whenever a new patient walks through the door and we can see that there is an issue, whether it is big or small, we make sure that they are made aware of what they need to do in order to prevent whatever their situation may be getting worse. We find that a lot of patients are aware of what they need to do in order to maintain good oral hygiene but either don’t do it regularly enough or are unaware of the potential risks involved.

Making Our Patients Aware of the Risks

Here at Birmingham Dental Specialists, we want to make not only our patients but visitors of our website aware of the potential risks of poor oral hygiene. Not only will it make our lives much easier but it will allow for you to live a normal happy life as well.

Most teeth and gum problems that we come across are because of issues that could have been nipped in the bud from a much earlier stage and we hope that this blog will be able to give you a bit of an idea as to what you can do to prevent any further problems.

What Techniques Should I be using?

It is all well and good cleaning your teeth regularly with a toothbrush but you need to be sure that you’re implementing the correct technique when doing so. So often we see that patients are missing spots on their teeth where they should be brushing and this is the reason why plaque builds up as a result.

Utilising the Right Tooth Brushing Equipment

We tell every patient to make use of electric toothbrushes, firstly. You will find that a manual toothbrush just does not get the same coverage as an electric does and is often the reason as to why parts of the tooth get missed. A good electric toothbrush can be expensive but you need to consider it as an investment to your health.

Maintained well enough and they can last for a number of years. Colgate provide a number of useful articles like tooth brushing techniques as well as many more that will help you prevent any further issues with your teeth. Again, Colgate are keen advocates of the effectiveness of an electric toothbrush and its certainly a method we recommend.

Brushing at Least Twice a Day

As well as making sure that you’re using the right techniques, it’s important that you remember to clean regularly. You are often told to brush when you wake up and before you go to bed but I personally recommend that this is the minimum requirement.

Here at Birmingham Dental Specialists, we will always tell you to try and brush at least twice a day. This will ensure that you’re in a healthy habit and will rid of any food and harmful bacteria that would have built up during the day. I try to brush at some point during the afternoon and when I get home but if you can aim for around 3 times a day, then this is a good target to set yourself.
